WHO Behind What We Do: Alton “Honeycomb” Singleton

By: Taylor McPherson, Director of Communications & Community Engagement

The tack coating within an asphalt roadway is not something that a motorist would ever consider until they have driven through it – it is quite literally sticky business. However, tack can make or break the reliability and longevity of a roadway.

Alton Singleton, more commonly referred to as “Honeycomb” by his teammates, makes working with this material easy and efficient. Whether he’s running the tack truck or the screed on a paver, Honeycomb is a tremendous example of our core value of stewardship by caring for resources well. As an equipment operator and key part of the paving crew led by Dennis Harrod, Honeycomb lives by the definition of “crossing your t’s and dotting your i’s” through his diligent care for equipment.

When working with material as tenacious as tack coating, it’s important to prioritize the upkeep of machinery in order to avoid unnecessary complications. “Honeycomb is great about keeping his tack truck clean,” said Jarod Riles, General Superintendent. Victor Enriquez, one of Honeycomb’s teammates, backed Jarod’s sentiment, saying, “He’s good about making sure all systems are running in tip-top shape.”

As our team has recently been experimenting with a tactless tack coating that doesn’t stick to tire wheels, Honeycomb’s attention to detail has been a key asset in the process. “He’s very informative when it comes to the task at hand,” said Victor.

In addition to being a reliable member of the team, Honeycomb is also known to his teammates as someone who is dedicated to making sure the job gets done every single day. “Honeycomb is someone you can count on day in and day out,” said Victor. Dennis Harrod agreed, saying, “he’s never missed a day since he’s been on the crew.”

When you’re with your coworkers around the clock like our team is, you start to see them as your family. For us, Honeycomb is an integral part of the family. If you were to ask any of his teammates, they would wholeheartedly agree.

We thank Honeycomb for being a crucial part of our companies. For more than nine years, he’s served as a shining example of what it means to be a good steward of resources and, more importantly, relationships. Honeycomb is held in high regard by his team as someone who they can count on without a doubt. It’s easy to see the love and respect his teammates have for him. Thus, it is with great pride and honor that we celebrate Honeycomb as our next WHO behind what we DO.
