Changes in Northern Paving Ops

On his first day of employment in October 1998, Jarod “JJ” Riles was a recent high school graduate looking for higher earning potential than his landscaping job afforded him. He caught on quickly, moving different positions until he was running his own paving crew 10 years later.

Paving even interested JJ as a boy, since his father, Tommy Riles, was a long-time Lehman-Roberts Co. employee. JJ even remembers an 8th grade science project he did on preventable rutting methods using fiber pave. In addition to working with and learning from his father, his also credits Jimmy Isom, Julian Williamson, Mickey Graham, Maurice Perry, Terry Ketchum, Don Fletcher and Johnny Driver with 20 years of “on-the-job-training.”

“They may have all laid asphalt basically the same way, but they approached it differently,” JJ said. “They had different techniques for handling people, too. I learned something from every one of them.”

He will utilize everything he has learned as he assumes the role of General Superintendent for the Northern Paving Operations this year. In December, employees were given the opportunity to apply for the position, open due to Don Fletcher’s impending move to project management.

“We knew our bench had strong talent,” said Pat Nelson on the decision to fill the position this way. “Our team is dedicated to their crews as much as the quality of the jobs. They also embraced the leadership training begun last year.”

Pat went on to say, “Don had big shoes to fill when Johnny Driver retired and he has been a huge asset to us in that role. I have every confidence JJ will thrive in the role, too, and look forward to what both men will accomplish in 2018.”

Join us as we congratulate and support both JJ and Don in their new positions.
