This three-year project consists of cold planing/paving of the mainline for over three miles and replacing with full depth asphalt. New ramps are to be constructed at U.S. 72 (Poplar Avenue) and Walnut Grove Road. A new service road will be built on East- and West-Bound I-240, essentially adding an additional lane to the existing I-240. This project will consists of a total of over 100,000 hot mix tons, using nine different types of asphalt mixes and three different grades of liquid asphalt cement.
The mainline was completed through the asphalt binder (second asphalt lift from top surface) during the first phase of the job because of the deteriorated condition of the existing pavement. This forced traffic to use the shoulder as a travel lane in order to construct the service roads. This mainline work was scheduled so that the cold planning and placement of the first lift of asphalt were to be constructed Sunday through Thursday nights between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM. All night work was to be paved, striped and open to traffic by 6:00 AM. Also to expedite work, TDOT allowed this operation to close two lanes of interstate at 8:00 PM Friday night, working around the clock to have travel lanes open by 6:00 AM Monday morning. This was to done on no more than six consecutive weekends. Other construction phases are currently in progress. This project shall be completed in its entirety on or before June 30, 2013.
